My grandma had emphysema (as do I) and she also had a quadruple bypass. She passed away at 94 yrs. of age. She would take her oxygen off to have a cig. She was at one time a 2 pack a day smoker. I believe it depends on how you choose to live your life. Nobody can predict how long you have to live. Like someone else said you could get hit by a bus. I try to live my life to the fullest and enjoy what I have in the now. Life is too precious to worry about when THAT day will come. Hugs

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, my understanding is that even if the flu vaccine manufacturers guess wrong on what virus is going to be Bug of the Year and it doesn't prevent you from getting the flu, having the shot at least makes the symptoms less severe. With COPD, any respiratory infection can get very serious so it's wise to do whatever you can, and that includes the pneumonia shot (and you get that only every ten years, I think).

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, I remember years ago that some people reported getting a mild case of the flu after a shot, but I'm talking a lot of years, decades, really. I've never had a problem, not even a sore arm. Not sure what it costs now, but I had a gap with no insurance before I was eligible for Medicare and I remember paying $25. That was seven years ago, so someone else will tell you what it costs.

Thank you glendaquack.... I am wondering if the shots make you sick when you have them. I am going to get the flu shot and have an appointment with my pulmonary Dr on Nov. 19th, and will ask him to do it then....not sure my insurance pays for it....I am on one that doenst' pay much without big co pays and have to stay in the network. Thanks for your response.

Question. I see most have posted they have COPD, and dont' mention emphysema. I was diagnosed with both, and the amount of loss of breathing power was discussed as well.....Also, do most of you get flu shots? I have never had one, but hear that pneumonia is an issue along with the COPD....Just curious and trying to learn...My Dr. doesn't or hasnt' given me alot of info concerning this. Thanks for any responses.
