Will Quitting My Inhalers Cause Me To Get Worse Quicker?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

My inhalers are making my blood sugar to rise sharply. I keep my diabetes under control normally very well.
I think its the steroid in Breo. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do? My inhalers. Breo and Tudorza don't seem to help my getting short of breathe. Turning my oxygen up helps though. Also recently on my own have started exercising. Breathing exercises, recumbent bike, and treadmill.

I'd talk with your pulmonologist about how your blood sugar and your inhalers are related. I've never heard that the steroid in any of the inhalers caused significant increases in blood sugar. Oral steroids, yes, but not inhaled. That said, Breo is new on the market and maybe there's something different about those.

Assuming that you've been taking both Tudorza and Breo for at least three months, I would talk about the fact that you don't believe either is doing any good, and see if he would agree to you dropping first one and then the other. I'd suggest that you drop the Breo first for a month and see what differences you notice in your breathing. If you don't notice any difference, then stop it and stop the Tudorza for a month. If you don't see any difference, at that point, you're two meds down. My guess is, however, you will see a significant difference when you don't take them. Many many people thought meds were doing nothing for them and didn't realize until they stopped taking them what a difference they did make.

A regular, daily exercise program can make a huge difference in how well you breathe. Keep that up, and you may find yourself doing very well!

I have my regular Drs. permission to stop Breo the steroid inhaler. I'm weaning myself off now until Friday. My lung Dr. is on vacation until the 23rd. I'm sure I won't get in to see him until sometime in April. Besides my diabetes I also have to worry about my eyes because of the Fuch's disease. Thank you for your comment!

I use Spariva & Symbacort They do wonders for my breathing. Ask your doctor to switch things around. It cant hurt to ask.

Tudorza Pressair is similar to Spiriva, both are anticholinergics, which are not steriods. I'm not sure if Breo has a steriod in it or not.

I believe both of those meds are steroids and like @prednisone cause significant weight gain. I had to speak to my doctors and my pharmacist because I am also diabetic. What I am saying is just talk to your dotors.
