What Kinds Of Physical Exercises Do Others Use And What Kinds Of Results Do You Achieve?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Recently I read online about some breathing exercises which I have been practicing, but most of the winter I have been holed up in my apartment with little physical exercise. The same article that recommeneded the breathing exercises also stated that bicycling was one of the best exercises for those suffering with COPD. I would like to know if others have any experience with this or what kind of physical exercises others experience or recommend.

Aerobic exercise of any kind: walking, riding a bike, roller skating, lumping rope; choose your poison, but plan on doing it for at least 30 minutes without stopping. That's your goal, start slow and increase slowly until you have reached 30 minutes and then you can increase speed, distance, time, whatever. You should also be doing strengthening/resistance exercise; at least three times a week, concentrating on upper, lower and core muscle groups.

I've been exercising daily since 2003. I do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, usually walking on a treadmill, and weights three times a week. Sometimes I do water aerobics if I'm in the right place at the right time.

My exercise program is the reason that I consult in my professional field, travel by air at least twice a month, do a lot of advocacy for COPD and emphysema on a national level and can still play with my grandchildren. My FEV1 hovers in the mid 30's, I'm 70 and I use O2 for sleep, exercise and flying, and 24/7 at altitudes of more than 4000 feet. Life is a lot of fun for me. And exercise is the key.

Walking, steps, I golf so I get a lot of walking done with this activity even though I do use a cart there is still walking involved. I find standing as much as possible vs sitting helps also. If I sit to much I find it harder to breath when I do decide to become active

If you have a computer, type in "exercises for copd patients ". There are many videos of chair exercises for us that are not strenuous but work many parts of the body.
