Should You Reduce Your O2 Intake When Going To Bed
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi All
I was wondering if we should turn down the oxygen output when we go to bed, reason being is that i am on 5l. and have been for along time. The last while i have been exercising really hard, lost more weight and been feeling fantastic, %O2 has slowly but steadily increased and resting heart rate right down to 62 and waking up in the morning feeling refreshed. THEN yesterday morning i woke up and for no apparent reason was so exhausted i could barely open my eyes, never the less i had my… read more

I agree with Jean. Keep your eye on O2 SATs and discuss your O2 plan with doc. There is now a NIV or Astral machine that is designed for sleep O2 users who do not need a bipap or CPap but uses controlled pressures for O2 delivery making it more efficient than a cannula. Your FEV1 needs to be lower than 52% to qualify. Discuss with your pulmo doc.

This is definitely something you should talk with your doc about. It does sounds as though an overnight oximetry would work for you and might indicate that your O2 at night should be decreased. Do you have an oximeter? You should be checking your O2 sats during the day, too. You could probably maintain a good saturation with less than 5 lpom during the day

I adjust my 02 constantly. When I am working the horses and caring for the farm it is on 4, when I am resting inside it can be on 3 or 2. I have been doing this for years and it works for me. I got to the gym every day, work on my farm, and in general don't let this copd slow me down too much. I have very severe damage....only 17% lung function.
