It's not easy, but it is certainly possible to lose weight with COPD, even when you're on O2. Have you talked with your doc about Pulmonary Rehab? More to the point, has he talked with you about it? If not, then I would suggest you find a pulmonologist who can help you find both the meds that will help you the most as well as encourage you in the life-style changes that are necessary for you to succeed.

In 2003, after being hospitalized for respiratory failure, I was almost 300 pounds, on O2 24/7, taking all sorts of meds and my FEV1 was 16%. Over the next year and a half, using a standard diabetic diet and a very aggressive exercise program, I lost over 100 pounds, got off a lot of meds and the O2, got back to my FEV1 of 34% and got a whole new wardrobe.

It can be done, but you need some help getting started. Find a doc who will help you and start moving. Start slowly and work your way up. That's what I did and it worked. You'll soon learn that being SOB will make you very uncomfortable and make you think you're going to die, but you won't.

Couple of things Ask your doctor about BreoEllipta as a replacement for Symbicort I was on the later for 4 years but what a difference with Breo More breath for me My doctor indicated he liked both but said a number of patients notice an improvement ( not to mention the fact Breo is once a day Symbicort was twice a day for me.) I use it with Spiriva This one opens my lungs in the morning the Breo lets me breath for 24

Second part Dare I? Ok exercise everyday 35 minutes. I also go for long walks on the beach on weekends . I really cant eat bread, it turs to sugar as soon as it hits my stomach. Dr got frustrated with me as he explained "Ron your body doesn't convert protein into energy, it converts it to fat" I eat way less than I used to but I am taking water pills and drinking 8 glasses of water a day Guess what? I am losing weight, not fast but losing. Cheers and hope you have a great day

Hi,
I am so sorry that you are going thru this. Like you I have so many problems and cannot exercise that much. I lost 12 lbs. by changing my diet to 5 smaller meals a day and changing everything I could to lo fat.
Of course I had to cut out all the sweets too. I love cookies so I don't buy them or make them anymore. If they are not in the house I caint eat them. Lol. Anyway I exercise when I can and changed the way I eat and so far I've lost weight and hope it continues. I hope this helps. God bless you. You are not alone in this battle.

Oh I should mention When I first got sick I couldn't eat and breath at the same time Like a lot of others on here I spent a week in the hospital just adjusting to my new state. Thankfully that was the only time I spent any time in the hospital ( if I go into distress I do go to the hospital but usually out within a few hours) Cheers and I'm glad you found my previous comments usefull. I am going to look for you and add you to my team

I agree. I am also on oxygen but started rehab. I could barely walk across the room so I was really afraid I couldn't do it. That was in June. I now walk 2 miles a day and ride a boke 2-3 miles. I've lost around 14 lbs in the past 3 months and have about 15 more to go. There is also a dietician what can help you with a diet if you go to rehab. Best of luck, you will feel so much better if you do this!!
