Cold Remedies
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Would like to know if anyone has any good cold remedies, either over the counter, or home that really helps them when they start getting a cold. Usually I end up going to the Doctor and getting a prescription, because my colds seem to turn into bronchitis or pneumonia real easy

HI, wear a mask when you go out or are around people who have an infection . A cold is caused by a virus and there is nothing a doctor can give you , antibiotics will not help as they are not effective for a virus . try taking air borne , it may help , and wash your hands often. Be sure to get your shots, even with them you may still get flu and pneumonia but milder cases .
Also remember when you are on pred you are more prone to viruses. I know many people, myself included who take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water three times a day . Can not hurt you and it balances your PH or so they say . I was always getting something as I worked doing taxes and people would come in sick and cough right in your face and bring in kids that were sick . At any rate after using the apple vinegar I never picked up anything . May just be my immune system kicked in but I still use it .

I start taking Oil of Oregano as soon as I think I'm getting something. I put 3 drops of oil into a hot cup of water and drink it. Oil of Oregano is a powerful antiviral and helps me a lot. I also have an essential oil mixture called Breathe which I sniff to clear my sinuses.

I always take extra vitamin C called Emergen C. You can get it anywhere they sell cough /cold stuff. Zinc is also supposed to shorten sick time.

I know it has been many years since I studied nursing but , with so many bugs becoming resistant to them ,antibiotics were not given until needed.,In the case of colds standard protocol was followed and the patient
told to come back in if it gets worse . Patients with underlying lung disease were given antibiotics . However, the gentleman who asked the questions was looking for OTC or home remedies .Many years ago when I was young we did not as yet have antibiotics and there were many home remedies . A favorite of many was a hot toddy - hot tea with lemon and a dash of whiskey, two aspirin,Vicks on our chest and every spare blanket in the house piled on top of us and we would
" Sweat the cold out " I think we got better in self defense .Then there was the mustard plaster on the chest but, trust me, you do not want to go there. Air Borne is really effective but, as I said , prevention is the key . Mask, wash hands often, avoid crowd and those who are ill and get your shots . It should be fun to see what remedies they use or remember being used .

I'm a firm believer in not getting sick in the first place but we all know how well that works. I use Alka Seltzer Plus Severe cough, mucus and congestion. it keeps the stuff broke up so I can get it out. And drink lots of water.
