Maybe you should check with your doctor that you don't have asthma as well. Smoking disguises asthma and a lot of people are diagnosed after they stop smoking.
Better check with your doctor...maybe prednisone or ventolin inhaler could help.
I asked my doctor why is it, when I lay down, that the coughing starts. She said things start to move around which made sense. I didn't ask exactly what, but assumed its when the body is resting it starts to do its healing work. Finding out the differences between Asthma, Allergies and COPD is not easy without thorough testing and monitoring, Ive been changed from so many powders and puffers but now am back on Symbicort and Ventolin, The coughing has been minimal since the changeover, and after 5 years off smoking after 50 years of it, I'm starting to feel better and breathing easier between doses of Symbicort and occasional Ventolin.
I use Mucinex. It stops me from coughing, but also makes it difficult to cough up flem. Maybe ask your doctor before taking these.
