Lack Of Sleep
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

It it common with c.o.p.d. To have minimum sleep. Once asleep I can sleep for several hours but it can take 4 - 5 hours to get to sleep I don't feel tired and go to bed as late as possible . I try & keep busy during the day allowing for limitations so should be relaxed & tired . Many thanks in advance

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, I can't for a minute believe you don't have sleep apnea. I had the exact same symptoms for years before my wife had had enough and finally pushed me to get tested and I did have it with a very low oxygen intake while sleeping. I now use a cpap aching with a humidifier and oxygen from my concentrator whenever I sleep and sometimes I use it during the day if I'm having a bad breathing day. You do what you're comfortable with but if I were you I would get retested. Best of luck.

It's actually called a cornet. You can probably find it on line or in a medical supply store if you have one near you. I also suggest you look into a volumetric exerciser which strengthens your ability to inhale. I received both tools in the hospital when I was last there and I use both every day when doing my workout.

@BarrieEvens. After reading your latest post, I'm now thinking you may not have sleep apnea because you keep falling asleep or wanting to at all different times. Sleep Apnea is a condition that occurs once you are asleep where your breathing gets real shallow and the flapper valve in your throat relaxes causing snoring. A cpap or constant positive air pressure machine with possible oxygen and a humidifier depending on your needs are used to correct this problem. I hope you and your Doctor can figure it out. I work with a guy who has sleep apnea and is a pilot. He has to use a cpap and provide the FHA with documented use but it doesn't affect his ability to be a pilot if that helps.

I too go through cycles where I can't get to sleep after laying in bed for several hours; or fall asleep for 10-15 minutes until I get so frustrated I get back up and then take a 5 hour nap during the day or sometimes multiple naps. There are other times I have no problem at all getting to sleep and sleeping through the night. I know prednisone can give you insomnia along with its other lovely side affects. I have used Melatonin in the past for several nights until I get my cycle back on track.
