A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Why is it that I can walk on a treadmill for 30 minutes but walking from car into store, I am sob? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Thanks!!!

Also, do you have something you hang onto on the TM? Are your arms and hands extended in front of you and hanging on to a bar? I found that I can't walk far at all without something to help me along. I can still walk from the parking lot to the store if I can get my hands on a shopping cart. Then I just push that into the store. There's something about the position you're in, slightly hunched over, arms out in front, holding on to something, gives you support, plus puts you in a better breathing position.

Walking in the real world is harder than on the TM, because on the TM, the belt does some of the work for you. When you're walking in the real world, you have to do all the work. One thing you could do is begin walking for exercise in the real world. That will make you work harder and give you a better bang for your exercise buck. The other thing you could do is push yourself to greater speed on the TM. If you're just walking at a comfortable pace, you're not pushing yourself at all. The point of the exercise is to get in BETTER shape, not just stay where you are, and in order to get better, you have to push yourself.

It could be environmental, something in the air. I have this problem when I go into a specific care home to visit a friend. I do ok in stores with a cart but to get down those long hallways to his room, I am struggling. As I have a lot of allergies along with the COPD, I am thinking that there is something in the air, cleaning products maybe. Outside you could be sensitive to automobile fumes, pollen, dust, anything. Try a mask next time and see if that helps, can't hurt.

when I first started out I would grab a shopping cart to use until I built up my stamina

I hadn't thought of that but that is very true. When I get into store and get a shopping cart, I seem to do better. This stuff is the beast and I worry about it all the time along with wanting a cigarette!! I just keep going on though doing the best I can and not giving up. Thanks!!
