People with COPD often get sore intercostal muscles (the muscles around the rib cage) from either coughing or the general work of breathing. One thing that will help is exercises to strengthen those muscles. If you google "exercises for intercostal muscles" you'll get more ideas than you could do in a life-time.

A good exercise program will help in just about everything you do. You should talk with your doc about pulmonary rehab or starting an in-home exercise program. Strong, well-conditioned muscles use a lot less O2 to do their work than weak flabby ones. Walking for 30 minutes non-stop and doing strengthening exercises at least three times a week should help with the pain in your rib area.

There are many reasons for pain around the Lung Area.... The problem is because Scans and X-Rays cannot pick it up, the usual concensus is either that ''Lungs do not feel pain'' or ''It is all in your head''

Much of this ''Rib Pain'' is actually inflammation caused by hyperinflated lungs rubbing against the diaphragm or Pleural Effusion....Anti-inflammatory tablets or meds both OC or by Prescription may help, but both are just a mask that blocks it for a short period.

With my situation and having lived with this condition for over 4 years now, it is not something that you can stop easily, unless by dealing directly with the source. It could be by having a surgical procedure or in my case, daily maintenance Prednisone to stop the inflammation at it's source....Bronchial Tube Blockage.

Intercostal muscle aches and pains are a different type of pain that can be helped with mild pain relief meds and a Pain Management Exercise Program or just as good try and stay active.

Hi Susan Hope today finds you well. Sorry Susan I believe that question came from Alice, not me, but I'll tell you my experience you know with my copy I also have Bronchitis, well my bronchial got so bad that when I coughed as Alice Saud the pain in my ribs was unbearable that I went to the emergency room. While there there took the usual, x-rays, nebulizer treatment . Medication which included antibodies for 5 days, n perocet for the pain. The perocet did help along with the antibodics. And yes the pain was caused by coughing so bad from my bronchitis. Ribs, chest unbearable pain, so I know exactly what your going through. Once the bronchitis eases up the pain will subside. Along with the 11 pills I take I take mucinex dm to help break up the phlegm. That helps as well. Feel better my fiend . Hope this information was if some help, n breath easy
