I have COPD (emphysema and asthma) My FEV1 is 62% (which is considered moderately impaired). I have a severe diffusing impairment which i believe is the cause of most of my problem. I cannot walk but just a few feet and I am very SOB. This is while using 3 ltrs. O2. Has anyone heard of this?
@ Jean.....Correct me if I am wrong or confused here but with DLCO and SOB it could be retention issue or hypercapnia, if you can no longer blow off the CO2.....So taking in too much oxygen can increase the build up of carbon dioxide and lead to respiratory arrest..
People like me with this issue must try n keep our oxygen saturation between 88% - 92% so too much oxygen is detrimental and needs to be carefully monitored by using your oximeter, not that that is exactly accurate due to fluctuation...
So in answer to Bonnie as i have no idea about your status except diffusing issues, have you had regular ABG's done to see if CO2 build up is behind the SOB..
Check with your doc, but I believe you've hit the nail on the head. Poor diffusing capacity often results in sever sob. Talk with the doc about a PR class because if you can learn to work through your sob, you'll find that you're stronger and more able to do things with less discomfort. As long as your O2 sats stay good, and you pump the O2 in, you should be fine.
Like they said pulmonary rehab will work wonders. They won't work you any harder than your capable of doing. Then when you're there a while you'll find you can do even more than before.
