Following A Lung Function Test My Breathing Is Worse Than Before. Is This Normal?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have bronchiectasis. Before the lung function test on Wednesday I had to stop using my inhalers, so obviously my chest was tight. I worked really hard during the test so after it I was not surprised that I felt weak and that my chest was sore. It's now Sunday, I'm still labouring to breathe, coughing even more mucus than usual (It's not discoloured and I'm on antibiotics three days a week). I just need to know if this is normal. I had a lung function test done before but I had a bad chest… read more

The Test and how you feel now is just a coincidence.....You were most probably heading for a flare up or exacerbation and it manifested itself after you got the test done....Bronchiectasis is quite different to both the more common Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis, so follow what your Pulmo suggests you take....Most GP's are not clued up enough......

If you have no colour change in your sputum, get a culture test done in case it is a Pseudomonis Bacterial Infection....These are becoming very common these days and you need to fight the infection before it settles into your lungs and forms a colony.....After that you can no longer get rid of it completely....That is why they are termed as ''Superbugs'' and antibiotic resistant...

What you described as happening prior to the PFT is probably the reason for your current discomfort rather than the test itself. You're having an increase in your COPD symptoms; that's an exacerbation.

You might ask your pulmonologist to see if The Vest® Airway Clearance System, Model 105, which is adesigned to assist patients in the mobilization of retained secretions might be of help to you.

I was fine before the test except for when I had to stop using my inhalers, 1 the day before and 1 on the day. My chest was tight because of that. It's since the test I've been struggling to breathe.

Just an FYI, my pulmonologist has requested that I get one of these. I’m still waiting for everything to fall into place for getting one. Do you use one and if so, does it really help?
