In the years after being diagnosed with COPD my thyroid has continued to deteriorate. Anyone else experiencing increased thyroid problems?
i started with an overactive thyroid at age 25yrs... at 26 i got pregnant with my daughter and all thyroid symptoms disapeared. they reckoned the pregnancy had shook up my hormones and the thyroid began producing thyroxine again so my levels were normal. at 40 years old i was diagnosed with UNDER avtive thyroid and at 75 am still on thyroxine for it. my levels stay more or less the same. just on or below borderline. 10 years ago i was diagnosed with COPD having been asthmatic from age of 49. at that age also (49) i was diagnosed with angina and spinal spondylosis. 4 years ago i became diabetic (type 2) now on meds for that. for a number of years after the COPD was diagnosed i was diagnosed on average with 2-3 new conditions per month./ most mild odd one more serious. thankfully thats stopped now. still got all those things wrong but no more been added to them so far .the thyroid doesnt seem to have caused me any problems at all from being diagnosed apart from on one occasion, having been put on HRT and the weather in the 90s in the shade, combination of all 3 things caused me ti go berserk one day. HRT was stopped immediately and i had to stay indoors during extreme heat, that was in the mid 1990s. been fine since.the COPD itself... im so used to it now, and im not sure if its actually getting worse yet or not. if it is its subtle. i have good days and bads within what is my normal ratio (middle ground being out of breath on exertion but it soon calms down on stopping what i am doing., having said that, although my breathing may seem ok. my chest often feels a bit congested these days. i dont have a cough. i stopped smoking over 10 years ago now, if i bring any phlegm up at all its at breakfast time. hot porridge and hot milky coffee seem to help bring that up and its not enough to cover my little finger nail.and its not often that happens either. my bad days however, slightest thing i do (even walking the 6 steps to my bathroom, can have me breathless. i am of the opinion ...if it hurts dont do it or do it in shorter stages if you cant leave it or no one else can do it for you. same goes for breathlessness,
Hi Jolene, sorry about your knee but understand. When I get home from grocery shopping I am always wiped out. I put all that need freezer or refrigeration away and leave the rest until I regroup. I have a sweet son Jon also who used to do for us. He and my nurse became sweet on each other and are now engaged. Shucks, there goes my helper.
@EsterG, I am on Synthroid and have been for years. Yes, a definite weight gain but I would rather the weight than do without the med. I also had the shots for my back and shoulder. I didn't connect it with weight gain, but having a thyroid that doesn't function properly is more the culprit here. COPD had nothing to do with it since I only was diagnosed a few years ago. Only use inhalers and nebulizer when needed. Hugs
I developed an underactive thyroid quiet quickly and have to take a levothyroxine tablet every morning
I don't know if COPD actually has has effect on other ailments, maybe maybe not. I do not at this time have a thyroid problem. I have had Copd knowlingly since 1997, but how knows how long before that. I lived in a smoking household (my dad) our house heat was initially fueled by Coal. Remember the black marks on the walls... Then of course when I was 18 I started smoking. So just what was the cause of My COPD who knows. Did it have an effect that caused my colon cancer??? that's a stretch. The powers that be in Medicine would like to find causes for any number of ailments. It is pretty much normal curiosity these days. It gives them excuse to get money for another study, maybe a new and extremely costly drug that can cure us of whatever. So it goes.
