I have been reading that we should exercise but I can't walk from my bedroom to the bathroom without getting short of breath and having to sit and recoup. I found my mother's walker and using it helps, but I am at a loss. This is new to me and I am still going through tests to discover why I am having so much trouble with shortness of breath when walking or exerting. I am pretty much OK when sitting. I would wait until you have a full diagnosis and know what the problem is. Then talk with your pulmonologist about a good exercise program, probably starting with pulmonary rehab. That's a program done usually at a hospital or health care facility with professionals who begin where you are and help you work at your own pace. I've seen people come into PR programs in wheelchairs and walk out under their own power in a couple of weeks. Regular exercise in doses you can manage is very effective and will make a huge difference in your life.
Karyn, after I posted about the exercise, I went through some tests and I was put on oxygen 24/7 this week and it has made a tremendous difference. I am sleeping better and able to walk around the house without the walker and am also better with my shortness of breath. I am also going to ask my doctor about pulmonary rehab at my next appointment. I hope you get the help you need soon. Breathe easy....
Thank you Jean. I have pulmonary tests scheduled for this week so maybe I will get some direction.
I also have the same issue, but the waiting list for pulm rehab is 8 months! I may not be here in 8 months i can barely walk now.
Thanks Diane! I will look at it. I see my pulmonary doctor Monday and plan on asking him if pulmonary rehab is available in town somewhere. Just did some tests at hospital last week so hopefully he can give me more of an idea of what I am facing.
