Hi Poobah, I had COPD, and a few years later lung cancer was diagnosed. It was diagnosed as follows: x-ray, CT scan, PET scan, then bronchoscopy and biopsy. I did NOT have cramping in upper back area of lungs. Hope this puts your mind somewhat at ease . Please do get a CT scan , however. Regards, judg69

Have you actually been diagnosed w/LC? I know the lungs themselves have no nerves so no pain sensation or response from them directly but any kind of inflammation in the lungs can cause pressure against nerves around the lungs causing for serious discomfort in the upper back, shoulder blade region. I know when I'm really congested and inflamed, it cramps up pretty bad back there. Stretching sometimes helps. Alternating ice and heat helps tremendously20 mins on/20 mins off for both. Ibuprofen too. (((HUGS))).

l have pain in the upper back but mine comes from my stomach first it's called esophagus reflux
