Spirometry or a Pulmonary Function Test is the definitive diagnostic tool for COPD. If you haven't had one, your diagnosis is still suspect. Sometimes docs want a CT scan to see how advanced the emphysema is. You should ask the following questions: what is my diagnosis? What in my history and test results led you to that diagnosis? Can you explain my test results so I can understand them? What meds will you prescribe? What are they supposed to do? How will I know they're working? What do I do if they don't work? What do I do if I get something respiratory? Will you help me work out an action plan I can follow if I do get something respiratory? What can I do to help myself? That last question is really the most important. You should hear things about quitting smoking, which is the most important thing you can do. If you don't do that, everything I have written and will write is worthless, because you'll continue to decline until you die. You should hear about exercise and pulmonary rehab, diet and weight control, good nutrition, getting your flu and pneumonia vaccines, getting tested for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, staying away from people with bugs and following your action plan if you do get something respiratory. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
