I was diagnosed 3 years ago when I had my PFT tested. However I had had a horrible cold and cough for weeks previous to this test. I also have hypothyroidism which they say can cause a cough if you are on synthroid. I don't get tired during exercise, I don't wheeze very often, I smoke, I don't take the Spiriva as it didn't seem to do anything, I have a cough with sputum..
Basically, it means that you have COPD. The obstructive part means that you have trouble getting CO2 out of your lungs to make room for more O2, so you need to be exhaling much longer than you inhale. Talk with your doc about Pulmonary Rehab. You'll learn the importance of exercise and how to breathe in a way that will help you blow off the CO2. With some luck, you may be able to live the rest of your life with few, if any, concerns about COPD.
Jean, My FEV1 - 1.12 (44% predicted) FVC/FEV1 - 2.33 (73% predicted) Ratio - 48 (60% predicted) What does all of this mean?
Jean, I will have to look up my test results
What were the results of the PFT? If your FEV1 was below 80 and FVC/FEV1 was below 75, you do have COPD. You wheeze and you have a cough with sputum; both are symptoms of COPD. You may have very mild COPD, so keep on exercising and staying fit. With any luck you'll be able to hold your own for the rest of your life and not be bothered with any real symptoms. I wouldn't have expected Spiriva to have much effect and I'm surprised you were prescribed it. I'd expect you to have either a rescue inhaler only or perhaps a long acting beta agonist (LABA), which is a bronchodilator.
