Stage Of Disease And Treatment Questions
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Is anyone in the stage of their disease requiring home care, nursing home or hospice? How did you know "it was time"?

Most of the COPD folks I know just kept getting weaker not able to do tasks for themselves getting cold and flu germs leading to Hospital stays and further SOB they often had the choice made for them ! @A MyCOPDTeam Member

I agree that sometimes the choice is made for them. When you get to the point where you can't do it yourself and cant' live with the resulting conditions, it's time for some help. Usually that's home care: help with cleaning, laundry, bathing, dressing, etc. If you can manage with that, many people prefer that to a nursing home. An assisted living situation can also work well for people who need some assistance, especially with meals. Hospice is a different kind of thing; usually designed to keep the person treated and comfortable.

I made the decision to move to a continuing care retirement community. I live completely independently in my own apartment, come and go as I please. When I need assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing it's all right here and I'm pretty much guaranteed care here as soon as a bed opens up for whatever level of care I need. I'm very pleased with this arrangement and I think it's the smartest decision I ever made.

I really wish the perception of Hospice being the place to go to die is not entirely so. Did you know if you have cancer and copd you can not opt out of life medically at Hospice! Many go for a recovery stay at Hospice so to put the idea out there it is a place to pass on is not totally correct and harmful to the over all mission of Hospice as a organization !

I've been procrastinating about getting a regular home helper for chores I can't seem to do anymore - laundry, changing bed sheets, dishes/kitchen and bathroom cleaning, dusting/mopping floors, etc. I do have a helper I can call as needed but I think it's time I got someone on a regular basis.
