Help With Quitting Smoking
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone tried stop smoking aids that were successful for you? A note: I have severe anxiety so cold turkey will not work. Cutting back is making it worse. I can't do the gum as I hag my teeth removed plus it causes severe nausea. I was thinking about that Chantix I saw on TV and I read it has pretty good success rates. I'm thinking I'm going to need something like that to quit. What have you taken that worked?

I would suggest that you find a medical professional in your area who has been trained in helping people quit using tobacco. They treat the problem as an addiction and use a combination of prescription and otc meds to help curb the urges. Often there are support groups and sometimes mentors they use to help provide support. These people have a better success rate than any other quit program going. It sounds like you need a lot of help with this, so try to find as much help as you can.

I answered your previous post, and you probably know this, but I'm going to say it anyway. If you don't quit smoking, the problems you describe in your previous post will get worse and worse, but very slowly. Death by smoking isn't pretty. It takes a long time, it's messy and very painful for everyone. If you want to live with any sort of quality, quit now.

I quit 7 years ago after smoking for 40 years. I used an electronic cigarette that had NO nicotene in it. I used it for 2 weeks and then quit. I was at the hospital at least once a month before I quit. Since then I have been 2 times in 7 years. I am stage 4 and was at stage 4 when it was discovered I had COPD in 2006. It's not easy but well worth it.

I went on the Champix as it’s called here in Australia..it helped me, it’s been 8 years now. I used to take it very early in the morning, with a great big glass of water..I would then take my evening tablet at about 2 in the afternoon, that way I wasn’t taking it too close to bedtime, therefore eliminating any bad dreams etc...you really have to want to quite though, but I found them great! They take away the urge for a cigarette..Good luck, I hope you’re successful, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be... your life depends on it!

Champix worked for me. I referred 3 of my friends to it and they all quit using it as well. Worth a try.
