I have been faithful in going to the gym for the past few years. I haven't been back since I had an exacerbation and got pneumonia last December. I was hospitalized with it and took me about 6 weeks to even begin to feel better. I feel fine now, except for feeling fatigued and a bit short of breath at times. Lim, I've been severe for the last 20 years, and the exercise is what I credit for that. I also use O2 for exercise, as I can't keep my sats up otherwise. Check with your pulmonologist about using O2 to exercise. I used the O2 to really get myself back in shape back when I first started exercising and was off it for 8 - 10 years before I went back on because I couldn't keep my O2 sats up while exercising. Now I use it for exercise all the time. It might make a huge difference for you. Talk with your pulmonologist and if you don't have one, find one. You need a pulmonologist to be sure you're getting the appropriate treatment.

Kim, yes fairly early stage. But with this last bout of pneumonia, I feel things are progressing. Considerably more fatigued and shortness of breath is more frequent. I'm going to my PCP on Friday for a follow up and to pulmonary doctor in a couple of weeks and hopefully I'll get more answers then. In the meantime, I need to focus on strengthening my body and mind.

Getting back to the gym will only do you good things. As a regular gym rat, you probably know yourself pretty well, in terms of exercise, so I don't think you'll be foolish enough to do something that's clearly out of reach right now. My suggestion to you is to scale back your routine in terms of intensity and start very slowly until you get a feel for where you are. I'd go for time and endurance again, so scale back speed, distance, incline, levels, etc. and shoot for 30 minutes of non-stop aerobic stuff to begin with. I found that sometimes I had to go back to very slow speeds, with no incline on the treadmill, which was my choice for aerobic activity in order to sustain the effort for 30 minutes. I'd do the same thing with weights, but do your regular stretching.

Just FYI and for future exacerbations (which I hope you don't have, but don't count on it!), get back to the gym as soon as you can. The longer you wait, the harder it is and the more you lose. I always started my exercise program as soon as possible after a bout of whatever bug it was. That helped me get over the bug faster and got me feeling better a lot quicker. Going to the gym is ALWAYS a good thing!
