How Many Of You Have A Problem With Aspiration Pneumonia?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Since October I have had 7 bouts with aspiration pneumonia. I have a few good days after antibiotics and then flare again. I am waiting for more swallow testing to be done done. The theory is inhaled steroids for these past years have damaged my esophagus so it doesn’t move food and liquid efficiently
I’m hoping to connect with other COPD patients who may have similar problems with aspiration
I rinse and gargle after inhaling my meds, but that only clears my mouth and upper throat.… read more

MargoGunderson,
Dialation of esophagus is not painful at all, they put you under, wake up, and, it’s over. I have never even had a sore throat, so, don’t worry if you have to have this done.
Good luck and God Bless

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Good to hear that you had the swallow study to find out what the problem is. I imagine it would be funny to watch yourself eat. You now have your own 'home movie'. Good luck with the Polmonologist.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member....thank you so much for your reply.
I’m going to discuss long term preventative treatment with my Pulmonologist when I see him in a couple of weeks. I’m glad I’m scheduled for a long appt....I have a lot to talk to him about thanks to all the helpful comments I’ve gotten.
Of note is that I was able to get my swallow study done last week! Sure enough, preliminary results show a portion of my throat where food sticks. Then when I cough, drawing food particles into my windpipe when I take a deep breath causes me to choke.
Crazy to see yourself eat in an X-ray video, but it was very enlightening.

Not that long ago I didn’t give a second thought about eating....food in, swallow, repeat.
Now I must be mindful what I eat, take small bites and make sure I don’t breathe while swallowing.
I know i’ll adjust, but for crying out loud...I need to practice what I preach to my grandbabies.
