Pneumonia is always a risk at surgery regardless of our age. But everyone has different risks, I would never presume to say everything will turn out okay, because one just never knows. It depends on a lot of different things. Any surgery is a risk. Sorry, maybe you should sit down with the doctor if you want and ask more questions.
You don't say what stage she is in. In the mild stage there may be no problems; severe stage, whole different story. Even then there are many variables.
When I had dental surgery, I had nitrous oxide and one other thing, I don't know exactly what, but I could find out. I heard the surgeon talking to someone throughout, but did not know who he was, or what he was saying or where I was for that matter, and did not care. Most amazing. Woke up very alert.
I don't know why they can't do that for other surgeries. I think that surgeons are generally conservative regarding COPD patients and don't like taking unnecessary chances. What does your grandma want to do?

Olga Crawford, my grandma is 80. Thank you to everyone who replied, the surgery ended up turning out completely fine! 😊
