I just started to work 4 hours every afternoon at a aftercare school. During the school holidays we have a program to keep the kids busy. When the school start I will mailnly help with their school homework. It is winter here in South Africa so there is lots of flu around. I am also over weight and get pains all over my body. Unfortunately, kids are little petrie dishes, just cooking up all kinds of bugs that generally aren't good for us. The walking would be very good for you, but probably not at the price of getting a cold and having it make you very sick. I would suggest that you not work with kids and that you instead talk with your doc about beginning an aggressive exercise and diet program to get yourself into really good shape. You'll find that losing weight and getting in good condition will do more for your COPD than any medications will and have much longer and better effects. I'm not saying don't take your meds; you should, but losing weight and getting in good condition will help a lot more than they will. Once you've gotten yourself into good shape, I think you'll find that you'll get sick and lot less and it will be much easier to recover if you do get sick. Then you might try working with the children again.

I was an art teacher with 5 different elementary schools k-5 for twenty some years. I saw over 1,075 kids a week. That being said, I had to retire a lot earlier than expected due to my copd. I tried subbing for one year on the secondary level and even taught at the local university a class in the evening. I went downhill quickly within that year and can longer cut it with ANY kind of job. LOVED kids - loved my job but, the elements of inflammation they brought to me was worse than hanging around a hospital full of ailments. Get out while you can so you don't lose years you may have to cope and stay strong during this condition.

I would not. I get sick if I contact too many people. unfortunately. I stay home just not to get sick.

I really like kids and the money come in handy but you are right. Children get sick and it is not going to do me good. Thanks
