Shortness Of Breath Yet Oxygen Is 95%
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm having difficulty breathing yet my oxygen levels are fine. What could this be? I have had my heart check with several tests and they find that it is okay. I do have A-fib. and am on Metropol 25mg 2x a day to treat it. Why if my oxygen is reading 95% do I feel like I can't get any oxygen?

I found if I had my o2 machine set to high, my o2 saturation was 95, but just like you, I felt I was starving for o2. My doctor told me that having your 02 liters to high, is just as bad as not having any oxygen. So I lowered the the machines out put of o2, and after a few min., I was feeling better. Who knew !

What's probably happening is that you're trapping air. Pursed Lip Breathing helps because it forces your exhale longer and get rid of more stale air. Retaining the stale (not the same as retaining CO2) means there's less room for O2 and sends the signal to the brain that you need more when you really don't. What you need to do is get rid of the stale air. What most people with COPD don't realize is that inhaling isn't the issue at all, the exhale is by far the most important thing we need to do when we're sob. Get that firmly in your head and always exhale longer than you inhale and you'll have far fewer of these episodes where you're sob but your O2 sats are fine.

BTW, if you're actually doing something, like exercise, when this happens, you can just keep going for as long as you can stand it. As long as your O2 sats are good, you can keep going forever and you won't do yourself any harm. You'll think you're going to die but you won't. When you do stop or slow down, continue to PLB and you'll recover just fine. It's one of the things PR should teach everyone, but they don't.

My stats are over 93% Oxygen but I am Oxygen intolerant and I am a CO2 retainer . If my stats fall below 88% then I have to use my NIVI machine to breath because my body is used to working on high levels [ as explained by consultant and still not sure what he meant ] I often feel I am out of breath and struggling to get enough Oxygen . the use of a Ventalin inhaler 2 puffs coupled with pursed lip breathing can get me through the worst or at least as far as the Nivi machine
I also suffer from anxiety and a trick I have just learnt is to try to count to 50 while you get your breathing back to almost normal .I fing because I am concentrating on trying to count that I slip back into "normal£ breathing a lot quicker.
breath slow and easy and try to have a good day . Hope this help s a little

Try some pursed lip breathing when this happens and it might be a good idea to see your doctor. Hope this helps. Huggs
