Hi everyone :) I'm learning that choking on food is common with COPD is that correct? I'm sure that I'm not the only one dealing with it. But what about passing out or fainting? the other night, I walked to the fridge to get something then the next thing I know, i'm on the floor bleeding with the family panicking. Is fainting common with COPD?
Choking on food doesn't necessarily occur with COPD, but aspirating food certainly does. Aspirating food can occur with very small amounts of food and may not even cause much discomfort when it happens. It certainly does happen when one coughs while eating; sometimes one can't tell whether the cough caused the aspiration or the aspiration occurred and then the cough. Either way, it's not a good thing!
As for the fainting, talk with your doc about that. Fainting is not typical of COPD and there may be something else going on.
I don’t know if it is connected to COPD, but I have had to have 2 esophageal
Stretching due to choking on breads type items,: rolls, pancakes, waffles etc
maybe loss of oxygen during your coughing spell would cause passing out. just my opinion.
I’ve been on a purée diet for a while now
It has really helped me with my breathing
@A MyCOPDTeam Member, Thanks!! I always choke on little pieces of food no matter how careful I try to be. @A MyCOPDTeam Member, that's what I'm thinking. It's scary.
