I would suggest a second opinion. Before you have that appointment, ho sever, you need to do some thinking about this pain: when did it start? How long have you had it? Did it come on all at once or was it gradual? Talk with your family about what they remember about your talking about the pain because everything you can remember may be important to a doc who's looking for a problem and what can be done to fix it. The cause may have nothing to do with your COPD, so don't leave out anything.

The pain you are describing is identical to the pleurisy pain I had with pneumonia. In the hospital when I got there they thought I had a collapsed lung. They used some kind of which I can't think of the name of it, but it was a metal heat object put on my back in the area of pleurisy and wow, it felt like electrical shocks in the beginning but eventually got rid of it. Occasionally, I will still after all of these years, have sympathy pains, lol, in the same area as the pleurisy. It was awful.
