COPD And Breathing Pain
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Just diagnosed last year so don't really know if this is part of the disease. When I breathe my ribs hurt-like they have been beaten. The only wat I can breathe without pain is to take shallow breaths. This has been going on for about a month now and I am really fed up with it-lol! Is this part of having COPD-and if so can I do anything to ease it?

Definitely see your doc. Try to be as specific as you can be about your pain: when it happens, what happens before the pain begins, how long it lasts, is it sharp or dull, achy or just persistent, where is it on a scale of 10 when it starts, in the middle, at the end, does it feel like pulled muscles or like the bone hurts, etc. There are lots of potential reasons for pain like you're describing and the more you can tell the doc about it, the better his chances of diagnosis the problem are. Unfortunately, the shallow breathing is NOT helping, even though you find it easier to breathe. Shallow breathing for people with COPD is NOT good, so try to breathe normally. This may be COPD related, but maybe not, so you need to get it figured out. Even if it is part of COPD, there are things that can help, so see your doc and get it figured out. If you don't have a pulmonologist, you need one.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Go to the doctor or the E.R. immediately , when i have pain in the lungs like you described it has been a flare-up 100% of the time , i usually see a tiny bit of blood in my sputum which you may or may not have , before it turns to pneumonia , see a competent doctor . @A MyCOPDTeam Member forgot more than i know about COPD and her advice always is correct , i am convinced any delay to treat this would be a mistake .

Fruits, veggies, nuts, lean meat, dried beans, broiled fish, low fat dairy products. Olive oil is good, probably peanut oil, not sure. NO saturated fats, refined sugar or white bread. That's the short answer for me. Others may have better diets.

You can lose weight fast eating like that, but be careful; don't want to go crazy. I like the recommendation of eating small meals several times a day.
