Hi Larry. Predz are the Villian every Body loves to hate. Fatigue is well-known and dreaded side effect. But when it comes to relief from inflammation/
congestion no other med is more predictable. Prednisone mimics both a steroid and a hormone, and treats a host of ailments where other meds won't do the trick. The body makes what STEROL it needs but doesn't store any for future use. In situations like injury or illness (like a flare-up) the body can't make it fast enough either. So my daily dose is probably treating 3 or 4 other ailments I have not thought about since COPD started. I count that as a WIN 🏁. too.
To answer your question though, every 'boosting" dose of Prednisone should probably be reduced over even longer time after the condition has improved. This gives the body time to catch up in making the normal amount again. (This is often called a 'step-down' or Taper.)
All medicines are prescribed on a Hazzard vs. Benefit decision - even our Inhalers. It would be troublesome to stop using any of those all at once without a Good backup plan.
I had to take 30mg, - 20mg then 10 daily for several weeks after a hospital stay with 60mg doses. πŸ˜΅πŸ€• I asked my Doc last year when could totally stop all Predz? He just smiled at me in a nice way.

After a few rounds of prednisone I seemed to develop itching which I attributed to prednisone. Docs PA later during exacerbation prescribed very low dose of prednisone which did not bother me at all. I also take Stiolto which helps; Flovent and strive to in a nasal spray (ipratropium). And of course albuterol for emergency. Stiolto works pretty decent but only once a day and doesn’t last as long as one would like. My doc is a firm believer in the nebulizer, which I hate. In my opinion all neb does is give me a very dry cough which produces nothing but a tummy ache. Anyone else have better luck???

I've been taking a low dose every day for over 25 years for my RA but I'm sure it helps with m y COPD too. No bad side effects so far. Trust God

It's not the dosage that is the problem it's how long you've been taking it. If you've been taking it for 9 months, you do need to wean off it. You can be on prednisone for as long as it's necessary, but the side effects can be brutal, that's why most of us try avoid the stuff like the plague. Have you talked with your doc about alternatives? If you're not seeing a pulmonologist, you should be. I would suggest you talk with a pulmonologist about what's been going on and get an alternative treatment plan.

is 10mg ur norm? I'm 58 in stages i take 10 mg a day no energy either. Dr said he didn't give them to me for energy, he gives them to me so I can breathe. But last time in his office he said take 20mgfor 5 days and go back to 10mg. Still trying to quit smoking ☹ . But talk to your Dr. K..
