I Am A Severe COPD Emphysema Diagnosis Patient. I Had An Exacerbation And Spent Ten Days In The Hospital.
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Fortunately I was not on a ventilator. The whole time I was there the Drs.and respiratory dept. wanted a sputum specimen but I could not get it past my voicebox. So my Dr. ordered a percussion vest. Has anyone used one and if so what can I expect? I have to wait a month before it gets here.

Interesting that their first response was a vest. There are a number of much less expensive devices that I would have thought they'd try first: and aerobika or acapella device, additional albuterol nebulizing sessions, nebulized saline solution, Mucinex and/or NAC or postural drainage. The vest usually requires that you wear it twice a day for 15 to 30 minutes. It actually does percussion on your chest which is designed to help shake the mucus clear and help you cough it up and out. Some people have great luck with them and swear by them; others not so much.

Have to be careful to because if you knock to hard apparently you can cause a Pleural Effusion.

An old-fashioned method of loosening mucus is simply patting the person the back for awhile.
However, the drug companies don't make any money if your physician tells you to do this and therefore they seldom mention this.
But it works!
