The five years is currently accurate, but remember it's an AVERAGE! That means it includes everyone who died the minute after they were diagnosed, as well as people on the far end of the bell curve: those who live forever (well, almost). I was diagnosed in 2000 with severe COPD, and I'm still here. I'm also sure that I had COPD in 1985; it's a disease that's a long time developing, and I smoked for 30 years, quitting in 1992.

To live well and long with COPD: quit smoking; develop a daily exercise routine of at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity every day and 30 minutes of strengthening work for upper, lower and core muscle groups 3 times a week; weight control and healthy diet; take your meds; get your vaccines; stay away from people with bugs and get medical treatment ASAP when you do get something respiratory. It's not a guarantee, but it works for most of us.

THE biggest factor in life expectancy is Life Style. Number one would be to quit smoking !!! Second would be exercise as much and as often as you are able to.Take your meds as prescribed listen to doctors and ASK a lot of questions I was diagnosed over 10 yrs ago and I'm still here I'm sure some people on here a lot longer than that !!

Happy Sunday I smoked for approximately 35 years, I quit by using the patches n gum,but honestly didn't need either for long as breathing was more important than a smoke!!!! Easy breathing, have a great rest of your day n week ahead....
