Aspiration Pneumonia
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just saw a discussion about this and can’t find it now. I would love to join in — to talk, compare notes about aspiration pneumonia. I was diagnosed with this in late August/early September. I guess they should have diagnosed me with CRS at the same time….Oy. 😊

Anyway, I’m all ears if you want to discuss.
Thank you.

My husband had this 7 times in 2019. Have had a lot of mini stroke that caused the thing that keeps food and water from going into his lungs. It got where it did not close properly. Just do whatever the Drs. tell to do. They did a type of therapy on his throat. Please they have a thickening substance to put in liquids and soups, please use it. My husband would not. He died of it but he had it for several years. Plus lots of other ailments. It happened right of COVID was first bad and I ask them not to incubate him but the did it anyhow. He did not have COVID. Please take this serious and do as your doctor orders. Iam not here to scare anyone. It is just like COPD which is a very serious disease. I am 73 got COPD 17 years ago. Have always taken care of myself and never had a flare until this year, never had pnemonia with it. I slacked off taking care of myself and was taking care of others, and it slipped up on me. Never want a flare up again. Thanks for letting me vent. God bless you all

Karla, you’re right though my doctor didn’t mention anything about my lungs filling up. Sadly, I know it can be life-threatening under certain circumstances besides COPD. In fact, I know that part very very well. My sister. Mine was mild and was diagnosed from a CT scan at an E.R. They prescribed the usual rx’s and sent me home to rest.

A month later, my pulmonologist said a little something showed up near the left side of my trachea. He sent me to out-patient for a Barium swallow test which was pleasant and easy. You swallow spoonfuls of different consistencies of barium with a video xray while they watch your vocal cords and windpipe in action. Very interesting to see the Barium go down. I passed the test - no problems at all.

I’m telling you this because (1) I had never heard if it and I was apprehensive about the results; so (2) if you’re ever told to have this done, don’t fret. And (3) if you have a doctor who says we should check this out just to be safe, know that you’re getting excellent care. That’s how I feel about it.

I’m starting to feel a little pneumonia-ey again. I don’t want any more prednisone so I’m taking an antibiotic that I have on hand. But, here’s the thing: My lungs have changed. They feel different. My shortness of breath is heavier, and nothing’s helping. But, it’s ONLY been close to two months. ☹️ I still need my Covid booster but my doctor said, “not yet.”

Like I said, I’m just trying to tell you what I know about aspiration pneumonia. I haven’t a clue as to what I aspirated. There are other people who aren’t as lucky as me. After I posted this, I saw another question about it.

I hope I’ve helped even just one person here.
Thanks/KLH

I’m sorry for your loss. You have gone thru a difficult time, but now you can help others go thru their hard times.
A mini stroke is the body warning you that a massive, life changing stroke is on the way if left untreated! Mini strokes are treated with blood thinners and anti cholesterol medications to prolong your life.
I had two mini strokes in 2015, and have been on medications since then. So far, all is well.
Breathe easy😊, stay safe😊

I believe it occurs when you accidentally breathe in liquid or food particles and don't get them coughed out. It can cause your lungs to fill with fluid.
