Prednisone
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm diagnosed with emphysema and have been using an inhaler. I started taking Prednisone 10 mg this morning for what I guess is a flare up - shortness of breath, wheezing, etc. I forgot to ask the Doctor what I might expect to experience as the medicine starts to work. Any thoughts from your experience
Thankyou

I've been on the tapered doses also. I have to really watch my eating because I want everything I see. I also feel and look bloated when I take it. The good thing is, it does help!

Prednisone is usually prescribed to help reduce the chronic inflammation in the lungs and airways, so you should begin to experience easier breathing and less wheezing.

However, that's a relatively small dose, and when prednisone is prescribed for a flare, it's usually a tapered dose, for example: start with 40 mg for three days, 30 mg for three days and on down to 10 for three days and sometime a taper down to five and then done, so your prescription is quite different from what is usually prescribed. Did you doc indicate how long you were to take it? 10 mg is often given as a maintenance dose; did your doc suggest that? Have you never taken it before? Is your doc your PCP or a pulmonologist? I think you need to find out exactly what your doc had in mind.

Thankyou all so much for your replies. I'm new to all of this and it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one. If I could stop beating myself up over the years and years and years of smoking, I'd proabably be in a better frame of mind as to being positive
Good luck and best wishes to all.

10 mg is a very low dose should not cause any side effects unless you are ultra sensitive. Then could make you hungry grouchy restless but most likely non of this on only 10 mg I usually start with 30 or 40 and then wean down it cause my BP to spike.
