Hi all I have had a couple of bad weeks and have been to see my consultant and he wants me to try a different regime of medication antibiotics and steroids for 3 days every week has or is anyone doing this and how or if it has helped thanks. Breath easy
People with a big chronic bronchitis aspect to their COPD are often prescribed azithromycin 250 every day or three days a week on a prophylactic basis. This approach was trialed at National Jewish in Denver about eight years ago, and there have been numerous studies since that have demonstrated its efficacy. The idea is that the antibiotics will reduce the mucous production and therefore reduce the number of exacerbations people have. Reducing the exacerbations keeps us out of the hospital longer, allows a better recovery and we get to have a life. I've not heard of taking prednisone three days a week, but that will certainly work to keep the chronic inflammation in the lungs down, so it makes sense.
I'd ask about stopping the pred after a period of time because you don't want to take that regularly if you don't have to. Part of the reason for using the azithromycin is that it has anti-inflammatory properties, so maybe once you get that under control, you can take an inhaled steroid instead of oral ones.
That's the regular regime they give COPD patients who develop complications. It works great but you can't stop taking it in the middle. Take all of it because the symptoms will return with a vengeance if you don't.
Thank you for your answer breath easy
