Does anyone know if cats cause ant problems with your Copd. My mother in law keeps telling me I need to get rid of my cats. Says if it bothers her asthma it should bother my copd.
Many years ago when I believed I had asthma and doctors simply refilled my prescription for Proventil, my mother suggested that my two cats might be causing my cough. When I mentioned that to my then-husband, he said, "That's too bad. We'll have to put you to sleep." I don't have that husband anymore.
My doctor told me to have no pets. They are triggers I believe.
People with COPD who have cats are urged not to clean the litter boxes themselves, or if they have to do it, to wear a mask because of the fumes and dust that is created. There have been instances where individuals with cats have had more frequent exacerbations and that often does more damage to the lungs, thus worsening the disease. AIt can be a risk for worsening the disease process.
A pet who brings love and joy and comfort and companionship is worth far more than any medication. You can always replace your mother-in-law. Good pets are harder to find.
I know...but I know some doctor's believe we should. :)
