I'm on day 49 of my new smoke-free life.I've smoked for 56 years. I can breathe better, feel better mentally and physically. I never thought I could do this, but I am. I'm using Chantix and it is a big help. I still have cravings with it, but I just say no and change my thoughts. I can smell someone who smokes a long way off. The smell makes me nauseous. I promised myself if I could ever accomplish this, I wouldn't preach to others, as I have been, and I don't, I do tell them about COPD because I don't think there is enough said about this being a product of smoking. If you smoke with COPD, I think you're just making it harder on yourself.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, I am assuming that those who have been diagnosed with COPD and still smoking already know what non smokers will tell them. They don't want our advice, I think they are looking to see how many are still smoking, thinking maybe they are the only ones. Makes us all feel good to know we aren't alone, no matter what our problem is. Smokers know what their habit is doing to them and as long as they are still smoking, breathing will not get any better. Anyone can quit anything if the desire is strong enough. I know how hard it is to quit, I've been there and done that. That's my 2 cents worth. Wishing easy breathing to all.

The two most irritating statements to me on this subject are "You can quit if you really want to" and "If I can do it, anyone can." I don't know anyone who was inspired to better health habits by feeling like a failure, and there have been times when I've thought that I'd rather be a smoker than the self-righteous, obnoxious, know-it-all I was listening to at the moment. That said, I haven't had a cigarette in 18 months and I consider it a minor miracle. I struggled for years and years, spent tons of money on gadgets, pills, hypnosis, and prayed for strength in tears and on my knees. I "made up my mind" a million times. I've also done a lot of things other people can't do, so I wasn't a wimp, but this addiction got the best of me. The way I finally quit doesn't matter -- everyone has to find his/her own way -- and no one is more surprised than I am to realize what I was measuring in days and hours has turned into a year and a half! My advice? Don't give up!
