Fev1
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Here I go again with another question!!! The last time I had test done, fev1 was 17%. The respiratory therapist said she would have never believed it for I am still working full time job (desk job), still exercise at gym, try to eat good, but do get short of breath badly. I only use oxygen at night. Those of you that have low fev1 such as this, what does your doctor say? When I got this result, I went home and cried and cried. Any more suggestions on what to do? Can fev1 be… read more

You're doing really well and apparently able to have a very full and satisfying life, even with a 17% FEV1. Have you had a six minute walk to determine any need for O2 while exercising or exerting? If you do need it, it might help you exercise harder, faster and longer, which might not make any difference to your FEV1, but might make your SOB a lot better.

What your FEV1 is can be influenced by lots of things: the humidity, how well you felt the day it was done, how well you slept the night before, how long you waited in the waiting room, when you last took your meds, and probably most importantly, how well you were coached during the test. My test results have been influenced by how well I was coached. The other thing to look for is to see whether the test used the same scale as previous ones, because that can make a difference. I wouldn't get very upset about a five or six point difference, because so many things can influence the results.

The whole point really is that the numbers don't matter. What matters is how well you feel and what you can do. You're doing a lot. Keep doing it and pay no attention to what the numbers say. Numbers don't define you and the RT was doing you a great disservice if she made you feel bad. You really should have felt great!

@A MyCOPDTeam Member you makeup your own mind on what to believe. My thinking - you must have positive thoughts. If you are over weight then diet! This helps everywhere in your body. Blow up a balloon daily, this exercises the lungs and helps them to improve! No more negative thinking. DO AND TRY suggestions. Good luck. Happy breathing. God bless Sandy

@sandycoThank you so much!!! I will get right on blowing up the balloons. Thankfully, I am not overweight. In fact, I am a little on the thin side so I don't miss too many meals...........lol. You are right, I am going to have to get more positive and quit being sooooo depressed. I appreciate your input. Happy breathing to you as well.

Sandy Cox what an amazing idea. I am going to do this. Currently I use the body of pen. I empty the pen and just blow. There is some resistance which helps.
