The lung foundation in Australia do not know of them at all & we are not doing Stem Cell Therapy for Lung patients and a long way off here. They are sceptical & are worried it might be a scam. Although my husband & I don't have a lot of spare money if we find out they can help we would travel to the US. We a desperate to speak to anybody that has had this therapy & how successful was it. The trip would be huge for me at the moment so if was really good results would be worth the risk. The⦠read more
There are no stem cell treatments for COPD that have been proven to work. The companies, including the Lung Institute, that offer them have lots of testimonials from people who would have you believe that they came to the center weighed down by their O2, on inhaler after inhaler, unable to do anything but cough and gasp, and after treatment, they threw their O2 away, tossed their meds and went skipping down the sidewalk. Ask the people fronting these organizations for any proof that their treatment works, such as, increase in FEV1, reduction in use of O2, reduced medications, improvement in 6 minute walk, or even improvement in quality of life as measured by any of the clinically approved measures (St. George, CAT, etc.) and they get very quiet. My friend, Dr. Robert Sandhaus, a world renowned pulmonologist at National Jewish in Denver, calls it "snake oil". There's a reason neither Medicare nor any insurance company will pay for the treatment. And there's a reason they're charging $3000 to $10,000 for treatment: they want your money. It's a scam of the worst sort: preying on desperate people and only after their money. There's nothing substantive for anyone in these offers. They DON'T WORK. DO NOT come t the US for this.
That said, most of the clinicians and researchers in COPD I know believe that the cure will probably have something to do with stem cells, and there are remarkable things being done in regenerative medicine at a number of universities and research centers, so there is progress being made. There just aren't any treatments now that have had any success.
My doctor has said that that stem cell research for lungs for COPD is way off in the future. Don't waste your money and be a guinea pig for them. It does not work
We went to Phoenix because the person doing the transplant had great credentials and we were also sent home with natural supplements and nebulizer oil. I would like to say it worked and who knows if he would be worse than he is now. At any rate, no long term help. We researched everyone doing the stem cell treatments and spoke to the lung institute as well as someone who had been there. There are many who do this that make all sorts of claims and charge big bucks! Ours was $7k which still was a lot but worth the try. My ortho says he has tried it on his hip and knee with no success.
My husband had the stem cells and can't say it did much.
