Honey is often used in homemade cough medicines. With mucous buildup, you want to cough it up and out; you don't want to suppress the cough. What we usually recommend id mucinex or NAC.

In my younger days when I had being unable to clear mucus and feeling down with flue like symptoms, I would boil 1/2 a pint of lemonade whilst boiling just watch that it does not effervesce all over your cooker so keep a close eye on that part and then immediately turn off gas or ring then mix in a spoonful of Honey and a double whisky (now that will make the hairs on your chest stand up) giving it all a good stir and drink watch out that it is not to hot to drink, when I have drunk it all I usually went to bed and you really sweat it out of you when you wake up you feel a lot less congested and a lot better. However be aware what is good for one person may not necessarily be good for another, but it certainly worked for me.
