How Can My Oxygen Numbers Be This High With Severe SOB?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am on oxygen 24/7. Symbicort, nebulizer and rescue inhaler. Is it normal when you have COPD, to have good oxygen numbers (96-98) while having severe(gasping) shortness of breath while walking 10ft or so? This is with oxygen on to #3. As soon as I sit down, my breathing returns to normal and my oxygen stats are good.

I suggest that you go to this site and view all the videos. You'll learn a lot about O2, CO2, breathing and how your lungs work. You'll end up understanding a whole lot more about COPD and breathing.

It's perfectly possible to have O2 sats in a very good range and still be very sob. The answer to that is pursed lip breathing. The problem is that you aren't exchanging the CO2 that's built up in your lungs for O2, and that's what makes you so sob. If you do pursed lip breathing all the time, you'll blow off the CO2 and have more room for O2. You should probably talk with your doc as well, because it can cause problems much greater than just being sob. You may need to use a Bi-pap or Trilogy machine to help you reduce the CO2.

Question: Why am I short of breath if my oxygen saturation is good?

Answer: Depending on your disease, sometimes you may feel short of breath even though your body is getting the oxygen it needs. It is important to use good breathing techniques, use your medications properly and discuss with your physician or health care provider your symptoms so your specific needs can be met. Exercise can be used to improve functional endurance and strength so tasks become easier with less shortness of breath.

I had the same question, how can your stats be good, but you are still short winded? I found out after a trip to the ER. That's not COPD, it is emphesema ? My blood oxg is good, blood test good, chest xray and ct scan good. My chest is clear, no wheezing, but just short winded. Do what I can and then take a break.
