My mom just passed away and I am in line for the house. I just found out about the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program, which basically allows Medicaid to take the property upon my demise and sell it to recoup their expenditures on my behalf. I am not ungrateful for the help I have received from Medicaid and now Medicare but it will be a struggle for me to stay in this falling down, needs work, money pit and I know my daughter will help me as best she can and I would like her to have the money when… read more
See a lawyer. What you'll get here are simply opinions. Medicaid is a state program and I believe things like the recovery program do differ from sate. See a lawyer.
@A MyCOPDTeam Member I went through this with my Mother but that was in the last century and my Mom had quit-claimed me the house 10 years before she became too disabled. I got most of my information about finances in regards to Medicaid through our Council on Aging. You may need to see if your local area has something for legal questions just for seniors. Good Luck. And as always breathe easy.
Sorry @MERP... I am pretty much in the same situation. My mom had Alzheimer's and hadn't pais property taxes since 2003. I let my home go to take care of her. Years of property tax liens and neglect make this house almost impossible. Hopefully or team members can give us some input.
Sorry Sherry for all that information I am fixing to probably go through that same problem within a year as my mother-in-law has Alzheimer's and were to be given the house and i knew know of this.
Well thankfully my property tax is low enough I can afford it. My house is really old and showing signs of its age. I can't afford to fix it up. There are options but with my two sons living with me doesn't help. They would add my meager income to there's and that would put me out of the range for assistance to repair my house. Can't win for losing. So it goes.
