Losing Independence
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone else worry about losing your independence by having to admit that living in your home alone is getting difficult. Some things such as vacuuming and yard work become impossible to do.

Hi we all get there sooner or later, try a old fashion manual sweeper in stead of a vacuum doesn't matter how light the hover it is the suction pressure which is the problem, and do everything little at a time remember the work will always be there.

Absolutely I hate the fact that I have to have my girls go grocery shopping for me because I can't walk the whole store. Cleaning my home has pretty become real chore there are still some things I can do it alot of it is do to a bad back and copd.i just found out today my COPD has progressed and they want me to start doing pulmonary rehab and have doubled up on my medication not sure what to the store but I'll fight it all the way. I will do what I have to do to stay alive

I posted a note at the Senior Center if anyone knew a teenager who wanted some extra money for vaccuuming and cleaning to call me. Also one mows my yard and does other yard work. They like the extra money and several of us use them.

We all move a little slower, breath a little harder, and worry about not catching our breath with COPD. And we all know EXERCISE is the key to making everything easier in out life. So no I don't go to the gym and work out. I make my home a work out center. I run the sweeper. (Watch your heart rate go up on the one) Maybe I only do a room. Hey, one room a day will get the house clean in a week. Outside yard work, I use my normal oxygen (not the portable one) and I do a little yard work at a time. I laugh, when I remember how fast I used to be able to finish everything. Now it's a hey Rome wasn't built in a day. Each day I'm getting stronger and able to do more. Remember.................................. If you don't use it you loose it............ No pain no gain!

I can’t do the things I used to do, I think about it at times. I finally hired someone to come in for a couple of hours to vacuum and mop floors the hard places I can’t reach anymore or move furniture. I can’t even go grocery shopping anymore so my husband does that. I still cook but bake my meats ,no frying as that bothers me. I use my crockpot a lot and I freeze what I don’t use so if I’m bad and can’t cook I can take it out of freezer. I see a big change in just a year for me, I do all my breathing exercises and use my bike. I finally got off some medication that was really causing me more problems than I should have, so now I’m feeling better the last 2 weeks I stay as positive as I can and keep busy. I love to draw, crochet, knit. Read si I have no excuses to do nothing. I also have god in my life which helps me more than anything. I also now have all of you and you are like family to me I have a place to go. My hardest thing is to ask for help but I’m learning and that’s all we can do.
