Anybody Else With Silicosis Or Related Diseases?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

How do you cope? Doctor suspects acute silicosis from a week of concrete vacuuming in a small wharehouse without a respirator. I was not informed of the risks nor did i have a choice to work so here i am 6 months later at 21 with a life expectancy of a few more years. My lung function is less than 60% and dropping rapidly, i had to pay a specialist for a spirometry to get clarity as to what was going on because my gp and the hospital attributed my symptoms to anxiety. I feel like somebody has… read more

Peter,
Anger and despair is part of the process

I smoked - very naively believed by quitting all the damage would be reversed.
Had to go through all those emotions of anger, regret, fear, loneliness and at long last acceptance.

My advice to you is to accept that at this moment in your life, your body is sick.
Accept that the illness is currently PART of your life, but it DOES NOT DEFINE WHO YOU ARE.

You make the decision: what is the BEST for me - how do I help my body fight back and heal?
Like you said the doctor SUSPECTS acute silicosis - maybe, just maybe it might be some other acute reaction
to the concrete and that your body can fight back.
GET A SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH OPINION.
In the meantime try to strengthen your body and muscles, without putting a strain on your lungs.
It is something you can do, even lying down.
That is bravery and that is fighting back!
The fitter your body is, the less oxygen you need to move around.

Read up as much as you can about your SYMPTOMS and the SUSPECTED diagnosis.
If you understand the beast that is attacking your body, you can read up about ways to slow it down
and fight back.

Not everybody does, but I do believe in Almighty God - at one time during the "accepting my fate" period I fiercely questioned a lot of things, also my faith.
But, since being diagnosed with COPD Stage 3 in 2011 - I have been protected, saved, carried through so many experiences - people sent into my life to ease the way and sometimes guide me, etc etc.

My advice to you is: Don't give up and don't give in.
You are PETER inside your sick body - your sick body is NOT Peter.
Try to calm down, write down your questions, list your fears, list your concerns,
Then you start looking for explanations and answers.

HANG IN THERE
CALM YOUR SOUL.
DON'T JUST GIVE UP.

So sorry, looks as if you have been hit with a sledge hammer. I would see some other physician with perhaps some research clinical trials. Do whatever you have to do to feel better. Many prayers for your situation, I can't imagine what you are facing but God can....

I am so sorry for your situation. What a lousy thing to happen to you. Go see a pulmonologist. There might be other options for you because of your young age. Transplant? Stem cell treatment? Praying for you
