Are You Taking Vitamin D (and Other Vitamins) For COPD?
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been reading about the importance of vitamin D in particular and vitamin C. My husband, who has a different pulmonary doctor than I do was prescribed a high dose of vitamin D and it comes as a prescription. My doctor has not prescribed it for me. I will talk to my doctor about it next time I go, but I wondered if any or all of you guys were also taking vitamin D as it is supposed to be good for lung function and excaberation prevention. If you are taking it......how much?

Personally, I would be careful taking high dose of any vitamin. My D level in the blood test was 20 so I do take 50000 once a week. Vitamin C that we buy from the store is only ascorbic acid and it is not the same as the one provided in food. The way I take vitamin C is I buy organic oranges, I cleaned them very well, eat the orange BUT I dry the peel, that is where there is a higher concentration of vitamin c. Then I make it into powder and drink it with some honey or just like that.

Actually, Kenneth, one of the current best practices for people with COPD who experience frequent exacerbations is azithromycin three days a week. There are a myriad of clinical studies and research beginning 2008 that demonstrate that this protocol reduces the number of exacerbations and allows people to fully recover between them.

Under ordinary circumstances, you're right that long term use of antibiotics isn't recommended, and prednisone certainly isn't recommended. However, this use of azithromycin has proven to be very helpful and effective for people with a chronic bronchitis element to their COPD.

Be sure to have blood work yearly to monitor the vitamin levels.
I take vitamin D(10,000weekly) & B-12 shot monthly for my MS and Mirapex for restless legs..
Hope you both continue to do well. God Bless

I forgot to mention, be careful with the vitamin d, if you have a multivitamin and calcium supplements, they often have d in them too, that can potentially add to your d capsules 4000 i.u. total. At one point my supplements added another 1000 to my dose. My doc said 4 to 5000, so I didn't worry.

Just good for thought.

Breathe easy and have a good weekend

Hugs.

Vit D3, 5000, MultiVitamin, Super B complex, probiotic, and Termeric Curcumin. It's helped with the bronchitis and pneumonia big time.
