My daughter has asked if I’d like to go on a 3 day trip to see Santa In Lapland. I have moderate Copd which is sometimes worsened by the cold, however it’s a ‘dry’ type of cold and I wondered if anyone had any experience/advice to share? The temperature averages -15, thermals are provided but as the inspired air will be very cold am I just asking for trouble by going? X
They absolutely do! You could always go and if it turned out that being outside isn't a good thing for you, stay at the hotel. That way you could participate in some things, but not take a chance on becoming ill. Talk with your doc and see what he thinks, but If you're COPD is moderate, I'd give it a go. Tentatively and carefully, but I think it might be worth a try. I would ask the doc for antibiotics and prednisone to have for an emergency.
Do you have trouble with the cold now, at home? What about since you've been diagnosed with COPD? If cold really didn't bother you before your diagnosis and hasn't bothered you much since, unless you live in Florida or well below the Mason-Dixon line, you've probably experienced cold like that and you know what that was like. Based on your own experience how do you think you'd do? What do you do now when the cold bothers you? Have you tried things like making sure you have a scarf over your face to prevent your breathing in cold air? Do you have appropriate clothing?
Check with your doc, sure, but use your own experience to help sort out what you should do.
I would ask my doctor before I would go hopefully he’ll say OK but you’ll feel better knowing now
Thank you all so much for taking the trouble to reply. (It’s the first time I’ve posted ). Some good advice which has been taken on board.
Hope everyone is having a good day today. X
Thanks Jean. Living in the UK I’ve never experienced-15 degrees. If the weather is really cold and windy it does affect my breathing but I’ve read that because it’s a ‘dry’ cold in Finland it feels different.
If it was just me I’d go and take my chances but I’d hate to spoil the experience for my family if I should become ill.
I’d really love to see my two young grandchildren’s faces when they see the REAL Santa and all that goes with the experience but I realise I need to take responsibility for my own health.
I just wondered if anyone in the group had been to Finland in the winter and how they were.
Surely Finnish people have COPD too?
Thanks again. X
