Ive Been Waking With A Strong Smell Of Exhaust Fumes Where None Exist
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Ive been, just recently, waking to the strong odor of exhaust fumes. Besides the smell my heart is racing and sometimes my oxygen (nasal cannula) has slipped off. Anyone else experience this? Its frightening. And i live no where near roadway parking or autos

The issue with Vaseline is actually two-fold. If you use Vaseline in your nose and aspirate some (breathe some in) to your lungs, that can cause a pneumonia that is very hard to get rid of. That's one potential problem in using Vaseline. The other one is that Vaseline is flammable, so should your cannula catch fire, the O2 in the hose will feed the fire, and Vaseline could take the fire right up your nose. Using the Vaseline won't cause a fire, but it could make the damage greater if there were a fire.

I have never had anything like that happen to me. I have woke up many times with my oxygen cannula off. Did you put a new cannula on your tubing? I have had new ones with a plastic smell. It goes away usually in 1 day.

I would check the cannula to be sure that it doesn't smell like petroleum; that does happen sometimes. If it is that, I have been told that if you wrap the tubing and cannula in a towel and put the towel in a low oven to heat for 20 minutes and then stretch it out and let it sit, not only will the smell go away, but the tubing won't be so quick to get tangled. I've never tried it, but I understand it works.
