NIV simply means non-invasive, it isn't a brand, so it means that they're not putting something into you, such as a breathing tube. I would be surprised if you're getting a C-pap if your problem is CO2 retention; you should be getting a Bi-Pap or a Trilogy. They are specifically calibrated to you and your breathing patterns and are designed to help you blow off the CO2 and avoid intubation. They all use masks and there are many, many masks to choose from. You do have to wear one, but you should be able to find something that is comfortable for you.

My answer was so wrong I should check prior to giving my 2 cents worth.I did look it up atfer reading the comments.
Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) refers to the provision of ventilatory support through the patient's upper airway using a mask or similar device.

You will probably be getting a Trilogy. It is a great help in relaxing the breathing muscles and getting a good nights sleep. It adjusts to your breaths and helps reduce co2 build up in the blood.
