Emphysematous Changes On A Cxr
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

My chest xray showed "emphysematous changes". I have no symptoms and my PFTs looked good according to the tech. I have no symptoms. Still waiting to see Pulmonologist. Could the changes on xray possibly mean something other than emphysema? Or just showing early signs of emphysema? Had PFTs 2 years ago that were normal, and CT scan over the summer that was ok. I'm confused.

An x-ray is not considered a definitive diagnostic tool for either COPD or emphysema. Good you're seeing a pulmo; you'll probably have another PFT as that's the definitive diagnostic tool for COPD and emphysema. Until you get those results, I wouldn't get too excited. If the PFT is good, you might ask for a CT scan just to be sure that what was in the x-ray wasn't something to be concerned about. If it does turn out that you do have mild COPD, you might not be having symptoms now anyway and you can consider this an early warning and change your lifestyle sufficiently to ensure that you won't get any worse. No need to be confused; just know that x-rays only indicate potential for COPD; it's not definitive.
