So I was on 50 mg for 5 days and then my doctor wanted to see what I like on a lighter dose as a taper for a couple weeks. I never felt better. I wasn't coughing up stuff and I was less breathless. Now it's two days after my last tapper dose and I'm back to coughing up stuff and even after taking symbicort, I'm still breathless and used my Ventolin. Is this normal?
I often have what I call a "crash" after taking prednisone and that's very often the sort of thing you're describing. My suggestion is you give some time, and if you continue to have difficulty after a week or so, I'd suggest you call your doc and discuss the issue. You may want to go back on another taper to get off completely, but I'd suggest that you start with 30 mg and go from there rather than going back to 50.
Its a wonder drug, but it will kill you. I was put on high dose prednisone after day 1 I was climbing the walls, wanted to go out and solve the worlds problems single handed, thought I was loosing my mind. Stopped after 3days will never go through that again. If you must use prednisone use taper pack and neb more often.
I am so much better when I am on Predisone all the same reasons as previous chaps. Asked my doctor if i could just stay on them; even at a lower dose, he advised they have an adverse effect on the immune system over time.
I took 5 Mg Prednisone twice per day for two months. I really made me feel so much better as the coughing and phlegm cleared up. I have been off the Prednisone now for about two weeks and the coughing etc is back, just not as bad as it was earlier. On the downside, I gained 17 POUNDS which I must lose.
Predisone is really great when you are having a flare-up but the side effects such as piling on weight is not a good thing. I put on 40 pounds last winter when I had to take it several times in a row. I have started taking off weight but it is a very slow process and gets really discouraging at times. By all means see your Dr. and make sure you understand the side effects. I didn't care about the side effects as long as I could breathe. Have a great day.
