Stop My Medications
A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am currently using Advair 250/50 and Spiriva Handihaler.
What would happen if I discontinued using these without consulting my doctor?

I've had copd for over 2 years and am also on the same inhalers(Advair or a generic brand recently and spireva). I only take the Advair once a day instead of twice as prescribed and Spireva usually every other day in afternoon but supposed to be everyday but I forget when I'm busy. I was told by a friend of mine whose mom died recently partly due to copd that she feels it was the inhalers with steroids that killed her more so than the disease. Does this sound right?? Thanks for getting back to me.Hope everyone finds comfort or a cure! Take care!!

Why do you want to discontinue them? If you think that neither are working and want to find out, your process won't work. If you want to find out if the meds work, stop taking just one for at least two weeks. If you don't see any difference in two weeks, give it another two weeks and if you still see no difference, then you're probably right: the med isn't working for you. Then do the same thing with the other med.

I would suggest that you talk with your doc and explain what you're going to do before you do it, not to get permission, but just to let them know. If you stop both of them and your breathing worsens, you know that something's working, but you have no clue as to which one. Just so you know, both are considered maintenance meds and you shouldn't notice anything special when you take them.

Why would you want to stop them? They are there to help you breath.
