COPD is NOT a death sentence. While a few people may die of it because it was so advanced when they were diagnosed, there are many people, who, using a combination of exercise, weight control, diet, getting vaccines as prescribed, taking their meds and getting to their docs ASAP when they do get something respiratory, have lived for many years. I have had COPD since 1985. I was formally diagnosed in 2000 and have been stable since that time. There's no reason why anyone with COPD can't change the way they behave and change the trajectory of the chronic condition. Reviews of death certificates indicate that most people with COPD actually die from other causes. Their COPD probably didn't help, but you don't always die from it. I fully expect to die from something else entirely. That's what knowledge and information does for you!

That’s why we arm ourselves with knowledge and learning the different ways to help ourselves. The breathing techniques and exercises and medication that can help you manage your breathing. Pulmonary rehab is very helpful. Knowing your triggers and warning signs. Having a plan of action is important as well. Learning what Emphysema is and how you can treat it. Knowledge is Power. Everyone has been scared at least at first. And we all have our moments. Talking myself through it helps me. Reminding myself what to do helps. You will be ok talk with you pulmonologist and work together to get you where you can handle it. The right medications do make a big difference. God Bless you and Breathe Easier

While I agree with what everyone has said, especially @A MyCOPDTeam Member, I’m not at all spiritual. Fern is doing great with zero ambulance trips for the last 19 months, despite having only 18% lung function. Knowledge is power, @A MyCOPDTeam Member, and while we all carry the COPD label, not all triggers or breathing challenges are the same.

The medical texts online have gotten better about not scaring the layperson to death, as not all cases of emphysema are the same.

Talk to your pulmonologist or lung specialist and learn your breathing numbers both today, and as they evolve over time. I’m at 26% lung function, and also not on oxygen, while some folks are at much higher lung function and on oxygen because of their oxygen saturation rates.

Look at the treatment options that might help you - a bulletectomy (lung reduction surgery to remove the bad parts and help your remaining lung function better) - or something like the Zephyr one-way valves may give you an option that you might find helpful and consider.

Keep reading, and your fear will lessen. Educate yourself about your options. Hugs to you.

It’s best if you read up on it and find out how to slow the progression of it. It doesn’t go away unfortunately, but if they can catch it early enough there are steps they can take that might help

No worries, @GraceMessinaDonner, what I wrote was not a slam about your faith. You be you, and take comfort where you find it.

In my case, I explain myself so that I head off any potential for hurt feelings because I don’t feel the same as others who do have faith in a higher power.

I was raised Roman Catholic with Methodist, Protestant, Lutheran, Jewish and Buddist relatives, so the faith debates began in my home at a very young age, and I knew from about 6 years old and onward that I didn’t believe what my faith leaders were trying to teach me - but especially the part where most of my non-Roman Catholic relatives were heretics for their different beliefs.

I hope that answer reassures you that all belief systems are welcome here.
